Oats have earned a strong nutrition reputation because they're a whole grain and a source of dietary fiber, including beta-glucan soluble fiber. They also provide nutrients such as manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and B vitamins in varying amounts.
A whole grain means the whole kernel
Whole grains retain the bran, germ and endosperm—the major components of the grain kernel. Refining removes parts of that structure. Rolled oats remain a whole-grain food even though they've been steamed and flattened.
Meet beta-glucan
Beta-glucan is a soluble fiber naturally present in oats. The FDA has an authorized health claim relating certain foods containing beta-glucan soluble fiber from whole oats to reduced risk of coronary heart disease when specific criteria are met as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol.
That doesn't mean any bowl of oats is medicine. It means there is substantial evidence behind the role of oat soluble fiber in an overall eating pattern.
Fiber does more than one job
Dietary fiber supports digestive health, and soluble fiber behaves differently from insoluble fiber. The FDA lists dietary fiber among nutrients Americans generally should get more of.
Oats are wonderfully flexible
Nutrition matters, but so does usability. Oats can be eaten warm or cold, sweet or savory, plain or loaded with fruit and seeds. That flexibility makes them easier to keep in a routine.
DOZY SAYS Sometimes the most useful foods aren't exotic. They've been sitting in the pantry all along.
