Why Convenience Can Make Healthy Habits Easier
Convenience isn't the enemy of healthy habits. Often, it's what makes them possible. A behavior that takes fewer steps, fewer decisions and less time is simply easier to repeat.
Meet friction
In behavior science, 'friction' is a useful way to think about the little barriers between intention and action. Finding ingredients. Washing a pan. Deciding what to eat. None is difficult by itself, but together they can be enough to derail breakfast on a busy morning.
Motivation is unreliable
Some mornings you wake up energized. Other mornings you hit snooze twice. A routine that depends on feeling motivated will naturally be inconsistent.
Design beats willpower
If breakfast is already in the refrigerator, you've changed the environment. The desired behavior is now the easy behavior.
The Tuesday Morning Test
A routine shouldn't be judged by whether it works on a relaxed Sunday. Ask whether it works at 7:15 on a rainy Tuesday when you're late and someone can't find a shoe.
Convenience can still be real food
Making food easier doesn't require stripping away everything recognizable. Pre-portioned oats, chia and fruit are a good example: the convenience comes from doing the measuring and combining ahead of time.
