Do Overnight Oats Have a Lot of Sugar?

Do Overnight Oats Have a Lot of Sugar?

When you see “sugar” on a Nutrition Facts label, it’s easy to think all sugar is the same. But there’s an important difference between sugar that occurs naturally in foods like fruit and sugar that’s added during processing. And when it comes to Dozy Oats, that difference matters.

Natural sugar vs. added sugar

Naturally occurring sugars are found naturally in foods such as fruit and milk.

Added sugars are sugars and sweeteners added to a food during processing.

On a Nutrition Facts label, Total Sugars includes both. The line directly underneath—Includes Added Sugars—tells you how much sugar was added.

So don’t judge a breakfast by Total Sugars alone.

Why does the difference matter?

Sugar from fruit comes as part of an actual food that can also provide nutrients such as fiber, vitamins and minerals. Added sugar primarily adds sweetness and calories.

That doesn’t mean naturally occurring sugar is something you can eat without limits—or that a little added sugar makes a food unhealthy. It simply means where the sugar comes from matters when you’re evaluating what you’re eating.

That’s also why nutrition guidance specifically recommends limiting added sugars, rather than naturally occurring sugars in foods such as fruit.

Where does the sugar in Dozy Oats come from?

Dozy Oats are primarily sweetened with real fruit and date powder, so much of their sweetness comes naturally from the ingredients themselves.

Some Dozy flavors have no added sugar at all. Others contain some added sugar as part of their recipe.

We’d rather be transparent about the difference than pretend all sugar is the same.

And you won’t find artificial sweeteners or artificial flavoring being used to create sweetness.

Read beyond the big number

When you’re looking at a Dozy Oats label—or any breakfast food—don’t stop at Total Sugars.

Look at Added Sugars and then check the ingredient list.

Those three things together tell a much more useful story about what you’re actually eating.
